I emptied out half the studio and said good bye to yellow walls this week. I must say that I love-love-love the color, it's so bright and happy!
I built the a Galant table for the sewing machines...
... and another one for the computer! It even has a key board drawer, so very ergonomic!
Aidan and I built these cool shelves that attach to the table top. We left the back off the second one so the printers could stack up. LOVE THAT! But what really rocks is having a desk with a work surface for the first time every! I'm not sure what to do with that, but I'll work it out. ; )
I'm also digging the old peg board that I painted turquoise. I reconfigured the board, it's amazing how much stuff you can get a 2'x4' sheet of pegboard.
Maddie helped me hang this pegboard today. I am so happy to replace all those 3M hooks, now I can move everything as needed. Easy-peasy!
Friday afternoon, the kids and I sat on the studio floor and watched The Voice while I put these together. They are for the new cutting table that I'll be making next weekend. For now the old folding cutting table top will have to do. We've got tablecloths to make this week so no more playing decorator until they are completed.
I replaced the old white bookcase with these two wire shelves that I stacked. I like them for several reasons: it's wider and deeper so I get more bang for my buck and it's open on the sides so that area feels more open now.
As you can clearly see, I have a lot of work left to do but I am pleased as punch to be back in the room. Next weekend I'll tackle the cutting table, hang wall shelves and finish painting the doors and trim. Then it's back to IKEA to get the right bases for the new chairs (I messed up) and a few more of these great drawers! (Aidan and I had a blast building this, they're a wild puzzle.) Then it'll be time to make and hang some new roman shades. Wait till you see the great fabric I'm getting for those!!!
I figure it'll be 100% complete in about 2-3 more weeks!! I can't wait!! Yay!!!
I'll be back with a full room shot tomorrow, the sun fills the room with pretty light and the turquoise blue looks so wonderful.
Here is the Modern June/Oilcloth Addict shipping department! I know you're going to be shocked out how much space we have, it's just short of a warehouse isn't it? Ah, it may be tiny but it's mighty, especially since I've got my good friend Kathie helping me get everything out. I've had fun decorating it up for the our holiday rush!
The window is covered with red and green gingham aprons and layered a string of tiny holiday banners! I love displaying as many vintage aprons as possible.
A piece of cotton candy cane fabric covers up a multitude of sins on the radiator.
My antique sewing machine becomes home to trims and ribbon for wrapping up gift and orders, I topped it with a kitschy tree topper for added fun.
I love the way it looks at night the best!
The rubber maid drawers hold all the envelopes, business cards and oilcloth strips that we use to make every package special! Isn't my old stool the best? LOVE IT!
Have you decorated your work space yet? Leave a link in the comment section, I want to see it!!! Happy Holidays!
Well it took me about 8 months to make this fun wreath but I finally did it! Last winter I asked my in-studio stitcher Nicole to start collecting all the empty thread spools; I didn't tell her what I planned to use them for because I wanted it to be a surprise for her and my other studio working Junies. My staff and I spend a lot of time in "the cave" during the holidays and I wanted to make a pretty place for us all to create within.
Supplies:
75 recycled spools of different shapes and sizes.
12" wire wreath form
2-3 packages of fabric covered wire
elastic thread (not pictured)
Spool of Ribbon (not pictured)
Cost: $9.00
1) Start off by removing the stickers on the thread spools and cut all the long pieces of wire in half.
Hind Sight Note: If I could do it all again, I would spray paint the form white! Seeing the green form between the cracks is driving me mad.
2) Tie on larger spools at the 6 cross points and then fill in the spools, in between. I started off only using the wire but I found that using the elastic tread was better for layering on the spools and filling in the cracks. The elastic allows you to adjust the spools till you get them in just the right spot. Keep layering on thread spools until you have filled in the wreath.
3) Lastly, tie on a pretty bow and enjoy!
I've got some more holiday decorations for the Modern June Studios, some come back tomorrow!
I spent the afternoon finishing up the Ikea rail system and added a cabinet under the cutting table! I just love how small changes make such big differences. Getting my tools up on the wall gave me an extra 10-12 inches of workable table space. This is great when cutting Oilcloth Addict yardage and Modern June Tablecloths, every inch counts. The cabinet is a sanity saver, the cutting table is one of those fold up cheap-O's from Joann's and that thing used to wiggle and jiggle until I was in fits! After propping the table up on some tin loaf pans it is good and sturdy. The extra storage, isn't bad either!
I didn't have the cash flow to get all the special shelves and cups that goes with the Grundtal System so I had to improvise. I found the super cheap measuring cups for $1.99 instead of their cups for $5.99. Not a bad trade off, my version is fun and functional.
I must admit, this didn't work out so well. This morning in a act of desperation I snipped some of the mesh out of this Target bin so I could get the S hooks to through. I hate the way it hangs, but it will be fine until my next pilgrimage to Ikea, when I buy a proper shelf for my pens and pins.
Now, don't get me wrong I like a fair bit of clutter and chaos but this mess has got to go! I can not make on more thing in this place. This evening is clean up time!!! Wish me luck!
My four lil' dudes from A. Bel Studio. They are magnets but I stuck them up on the wall with foam tape. You can too if you just buy the cake toppers from their supply shop.
Meet KRAZY! He is my new studio mate! I got him at the Crafty Bastard show last month! I LOVE HIM! We were setting up for the show when I heard Sloane from Sloane's Creations (Norfolk Craft Mafia) say that this is what she does with all the leftover tissue paper. I looked over and she was holding my bird! I feel in love!
KRAZY is a homegrown organic swan gourd that is decorated with hand-painted recycled tissue paper. Isn't he the best?
On the left are Aidan's "Magorians". I have no idea where he comes up with this stuff. They have an entire story line. Amazing. On the right are sweet treetop owls from Erica! What a sweet little gift from my arty fartsy friend!
These are fun, they are just some simple paper dots that were in a craft show swag bag.
I just thought they were to cool let go of. I love tape.
Just a cool patchwork vintage apron that I really love!
Show me your inspiration wall, leave me a link. I want to see something inspiring!
Do you remember the character that Bill Murray played in the movie Lost in Transition ? (FYI, watch it for free on the Hulu site) Well that is me today. I just walk around feeling all moopy. Heavy sigh. I forced myself to change my inspiration wall in the studio in hopes that I might get motivated to get something done today. Here it is....
This makes me LOL! I like to imagine that this is my mannequin JUNE hanging out with her boyfriend the patio daddio!
I tell you there is just never enough room in this house for Modern June. Here is proof. I just had to show you how amusing making tablecloths can be. Now this is about the largest oilcloth tablecloth I have made to date. You know it's big when it takes up two rooms of floor space! There was a round one that knocked my socks off but I think this one beat it. I tell you that industrial is paying for itself!
My knees are so sore from the 45 minutes it took to measure (twice) and cut (once). I have earned my keep today. I need knee pads! It is done and it is really pretty. Petra, mom of five, will be very happy to receive her new tablecloth. She tells me they are ruining her nice table. I think we can all relate to that!
My natives are restless so we are off to the play ground. Have a great day and try to stay cool!
I finally cleaned out the other corner of the bathroom and hung up my UFP's. Now I have no need for the rack in the main room. That has made a great difference, I love having the extra room.
My MIL gave me these red serving dishes. I was really grateful for them but storing them between parties was going to be a challenge, until I realized how great they would be in the drawer. This eliminated a bunch of jars and bins that I have on the desk! Again more room to breath. LOVE that!
Hi all here is a few links to keep you busy with. My original post for this information can be found on Off the Record. As for me I went shopping last night and I am busy working on something new. Show ya soon!
Right after Christmas my DH was sent out to Michael's for last minute birthday favors for Maddie's 10th birthday party and came home with a present for me! I had my eye on this great organizer for weeks. I have to say that it was lost for a week or two on the sewing table from hell.
I could not figure out what to do with this. Once in my studio it was big and overwhelming. But then I got inspired to create a "cutting carousel". Now everything I need to cut is in one place. And best of all I can simply move it from the studio to the "cutting counter" in the kitchen.
Now I have no going back and forth gathering up this and that. And clean up is a snap. It all lives in one handy carousel.
I believe they are still in the stores but if not I found them on line at Kaboodle's. Happy organizing!
