A couple of weeks ago I bought myself a new book, The Crafter's Guide to Taking Great Photos by Heidi Adnum. I have to say that this book is rocking my world. You might have noticed that I take some really bad photos. Well, I've been blaming my camera for years while dreaming of the day that I can afford a "real" one. Guess what? It's been me along!!

I woke up in the middle of the night all ticked off about a work thing and I was unable to get back to sleep. Instead of tossing and turning I pulled out this book, as I figured that it would help me nod off. Man, was I wrong! I think I read the first 22 pages three times! I was soaking up the information and fighting the urge to get up and grab my camera.

So this morning, between math lessons with my son, caring for my sick girl, and preparing for my Junie's arrival, I stole some time to play. I've never in my life taken a photo with shallow DoF (depth of field, but I did today!
And I can't wait to learn more! We've got new doggie mats to photograph, and it'd be really nice if the photos looked great!! Stay tuned!!!
I thought I would share a few pictures of my photographer, Meghan, taking the most gorgeous photo's for my upcoming book. I can't wait to show you more!!!!
My photographer, Meghan McSweeney and I are meeting up tomorrow to take some pictures for my upcoming book, "Sewing with Oilcloth." (August, 2011) Here's a little sneak peak at the behind the scenes...
My neighbors porch will be a great place to shoot, the evergreen will make a great backdrop.
The kids and I had a great time picking out greenery today. We're faking spring!
I stripped the dining room down to the basics so I could style it for a possible book cover shot.
Sweets for the sweet!
Every good sewing/craft book must have a cupcake in the pictures.
Last weeks Spring Bada-Bing was great fun! Here are a few photos of the Modern June booth! Check out these great interviews and videos from the show goers! We love our Crafty Fans!
I am totally down with this photo, this is exactly what I wanted this camera to do, I wanted this quality without a lot of fussing and without a super expensive camera! I took this with the cameras auto setting and then turned on the super macro feature. I am really impressed because this was taken in the awful overhead lighting that I have down in the studio, that light fixture is the worst!
Well I just can not figure out what to do with my pink Alexander Henry fabric so I have moved on to blue world. Not all these are new aprons, some I have had at shows but have yet to list on my Modern June Etsy shop. Some are just being re-shot using my new camera tricks.
In addition to the Etsy Lab information I was lucky to have a quick photo class with Tasha and some other crafty divas. We all gather at Tashas house and had a how to set up a light box. With these pictures I am trying to set up a big ol' light box. I have a LONG way to go. I need to go shopping & get some proper lamps, daylight light bulbs and some more white fabric. But for today this will have to do. It is fun to play around with it. The kids have learned a lot today about light and shadow. So is that an art or science lesson?
I sent my awfully washed out photos to Tasha to get her opinion. I love her, she did some serious photo shop wizardry and got them to look this good. Now I need a photo shop how to. Tasha how about Tuesday? No seriously check out my listing for this blue cherry apron, the first shot is her doctored one and the other four are my doctored photos. She is good. I have a long way to go!!! Oh, help me.
I have many goals for Modern June in 2008 one of which is taking a better photographs. I can't get a better camera but I can admit that I need some help. So out goes my call for some advise from my handy dandy craft divas and one sweet husband.
Don is always saying tripod, tripod, tripod! Oh and no flash no flash no flash! OK I think that all has finally set in. I am lucky that he bought a tripod in collage! Then he and I sat around playing with the i photo adjust tool. Wow, that helped a whole lot! As I am opening back up the shop (slowly) I am editing the really rotten photos that I have taken over the last year and adding the brighter photos on to the etsy listing.
But there is still so much to be desired with the photos that I am taking now. So here comes the troops with their crafty "google" knowledge! Beth sent me this Storquearticle and video produced by ETSY LABS. there you will find a how to video on taking a better shot. OMG! Not only is Mary too cute but they gave me wonderful piece of advise. I never new what all that menu stuff was all about. White balance! who knew? Not me that is for certain!
Also some where I read that a faster shutter speed lets in more light so I have been using the "splashing water" setting.
So by adjusting the EV shift from 0.0 to 1.7 I was able to go from this dark photo to this nice bright photo. and it is a dark cloudy day! I am shocked and delighted. Thank you etsy labs for the great articles!
This is just a start, I have much more to learn but I just had to share how easy it was to get this kind of result.
Here is the link list for better photos. If you have anything to add please leave a comment.
Hi all, I only have time to share a few photos with you all! Modern June is going great guns. I never ever could have imagined so much support. I will stop accepting orders on December 14th and things are going fast. I am close to a sell out. So if you want any thing I suggest to buy now.
Hi all, between migraine headaches, wholesale orders and making homeschool schedules I have not been able to chat much these last few days.
Here are a few photos that my friend Dawn took at the expansion trunk show. Which was oh so nice! The show was at the most wonderful studio that is located in a groovy warehouse district. I want a warehouse studio! But I want mine to have central air. With record highs outside the place was boiling hot.

OH I just can not tell you how wonderful the felt products were! If I did not have children I would so have her pillows on my sofa right now! I can see that Courtney loved them too!
Handbags and jewelry and much much more!
I thought it was great that Modern June was located next to the kitchen! It gets you in the right mood!
